Sabyasachi Spring/Summer 2007 New York Fashion Week, Couture in the City Fashion Blog
by Jen
My favorite collection so far unexpectedly came from the creative hands of Sabyasachi. A new name in fashion, the young Indian designer delved into his background and challenged the Bollywood sari stereotype by taking traditional fabrics and cutting them into modern shapes.
Leafy greens, deep reds and gold are common colors in traditional Indian attire but here they look fresh and new in the form of smock dresses, pinafores, and airy A-line skirts. The mix and match of embroidered fabrics, floral prints and chiffon sounds like a mess on paper but Sabayaschi pulls it through. His collection is bold, innovative and has just the right amount of ethnic to make it work.
