Fashion Week's Hottest Coats, Couture in the City Fashion Blog

From Left: Jason Wu, Michael Kors, Nanette Lepore, J. Mendel, Venexiana (source)

Did they get the memo? This year, fur was the end-all-be-all for coats in almost every collection. Whether as full on trim like on this fab coat from Venexiana or just as a subtle touch, like on the Jason Wu coat, its showing up on every catwalk.

However, this could serve as problematic as far as sales go for designers...with more and more celebs and consumers becoming outspoken against fur, these coats may not have a market to be bought it. Former model and television show host Tyra Banks prefers faux, and designers like Stella McCartney have been known to keep their lines fur free.

What's your stance on the whole faux vs. fur debate? Is it fashion, or cruelty?

Now that we have the technology to produce realistic looking and feeling synthetic fur, as well as having various fabrics that provide just as much warmth as fur or more, I feel that using real fur is taking it a bit far. It's a needless luxury. I'm not a fanatic, mind you - I eat steak and I'm not delusional enough to think they'll stop killing cows if I trade in my leather. But designers are all about being modern, and the great thing about our current society is our awareness of issues like this. When models are now having (albeit nearly nonexistent) fat pinched in calipers to satisfy our curiosity regarding their health, we're ready to take off the blinders to an issue that's much more pressing - the unethical treatment of animals.
